Jesus Seeing in OT 300x257When God walked in the Garden of Eden, was that Jesus? Did Jesus carve the Ten Commandments into stone on the mountain?Jesus is called the Word of God in John 1:1 and 1:14. Verse 1 says, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” Verse 14 says, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The First verse of the Bible in Genesis 1:1 says “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” In the last chapter of the last book of the Bible in Revelation 22:13 Jesus says, “I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

Consider a few possibilities…

God walked in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. Could that have actually been Jesus? Yes. Colossians 1:16 says that all things were created in heaven and on earth through Jesus and for Jesus.

shadrach meshach abedneg JesusIn the Book of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar throws the three Jews, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego into the fiery furnace for not worshiping his golden statue, but God saved them. Daniel is an Old Testament Book but in Daniel 3:25 the king looks at them in the fire in amazement and says, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire and they have no hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” [KJV]

Moses interceded between God and the Israelites and brought them out of Egyptian bondage into freedom. God performed miracles, especially the parting the Red Sea and closing it on the enemy. Then the long journey with God began with times of faith and times of struggle in which only the faithful ultimately made it into the Promised Land. Joshua finished the Journey Moses started by successfully leading God’s people into the Promised Land. Joshua translated in Greek literally means “Jesus” and in Hebrew means “Yahweh is salvation”.

This Old Testament story is the story of the Christian life. Jesus, instead of Moses, intercedes for us with God which is why we say prayers “In Jesus name, Amen.” Brian Iphone Jan 2015 194He delivers us out from the bondage of sin into a new life of freedom, but our journey does not end there at the moment of salvation any more than it did with the Israelites when they crossed the Red Sea. We must journey through our own desert seeking God’s Kingdom and God’s will with Faithfulness. Just as the Israelites that remained faithful and followed Joshua made it into the Promised Land, Jesus will also deliver his followers into Heaven at the end of our journey in this life.

While Moses was on the mountain, God gave him the Ten Commandments for all of mankind. Consider that it was Jesus that carved out the Ten Commandments in stone on that mountain.  He would later come to teach and show the world in person how it looks like for a man to live righteously according to those laws of God. And who is qualified to forgive anyone who sins by breaking those very laws? The one who established them has the authority to forgive us.

These are just a few examples of how Jesus is found in the Old Testament. Open the eyes of your heart and you will see Jesus on nearly every page and in every story! The next time you read the Bible, spend some quality time in the Old Testament and when you read about all the wonders of God, remember to keep your eyes focused on Jesus as Saint Paul advised in Hebrews 12:2.

With this perspective in mind, the Old Testament takes on amazing new realities and revelations as Jesus begins to speak to you through his Living Word in awesome new ways you never would have imagined.
